What is mineral makeup?
Mineral makeup is created from ultra finely milled minerals such as mica, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and boron nitride. The chemicals, bulking agents, and dyes found in traditional makeup are not part of the mineral makeup formulation, making it ideal for use on sensitive skin.
How does mineral makeup differ from traditional makeup?
Mineral makeup is talc-free, unlike traditional makeup. Talc is used as a bulking agent in traditional makeup, allowing cosmetic companies to create more product with less pigment overall. Though talc does have oil-absorbing properties, traditional makeup requires a heavier application in comparison to mineral makeup to achieve the desired colour and coverage. Talc particles are also heavier than natural mineral pigments and wear off and settle into pores and facial lines more quickly than mineral makeup. As a result, traditional makeup needs to be reapplied more often than mineral makeup, leading to uneven coverage and the dreaded ‘cakey’ appearance.
Furthermore, harsh ingredients (such as chemical dyes and artificial fragrances) often used in traditional makeup can irritate sensitive skin, exacerbate existing skin conditions (such as acne and rosacea), and even cause allergic reactions. In contrast, a more natural product like mineral makeup is gentler on the skin and is better suited to those with skin sensitivity.

When applied to the skin, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide create a barrier and deflect the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation like a mirror. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, mineral makeup can help provide UVA and UVB protection and defend against free radical damage.
The level of sun protection you get from mineral makeup depends on how liberally you apply it as well as the method you use to apply it. Therefore, it is recommended that you first apply broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher mineral sunscreen to your face and neck, then follow with a layer of pressed or loose mineral makeup powder for optimal coverage and protection.
