Botox is famous for being a cosmetic treatment that smoothes facial wrinkles, but did you know that it can also be used to treat a variety of medical conditions? Botox can be used to treat neuromuscular conditions such as hyperhidrosis, among others. Hyperhidrosis is a medical term that means “excessive sweating.” Any abnormal sweating (eg sweating when it’s not hot) is referred to as hyperhidrosis. People who sweat excessively often soak through their clothing or drip sweat and as a result, can experience anxiety and embarrassement. Regular antiperspirants don’t work well for those with this condition. Often, even prescription antiperspirants fail for those affected. Thankfully, Botox has been FDA-approved for people who sweat excessively from their underarms!

To treat hyperhidrosis of the axilla (underarms), Botox is injected directly into the underarms
just below the skin’s surface using a fine needle. Several injections are done in a grid pattern around the area of concern. Once injected, it essentially paralyzes the overactive nerves that are responsible for the excessive sweating. When your nerves can’t signal your sweat glands, you don’t sweat! Please note, Botox only prevents sweating in the specific area where it’s injected.

Patients can return to work and resume normal life as soon as the injection session is finished. It will take approximately 2-7 days for the sweating to reduce in the treated area. It can take two weeks for total dryness. Injecting Botox into the area is not a permanent cure for the problem. Dryness lasts anywhere from four to fourteen months. Once the Botox wears off, treatment has to be repeated.

For many people, treating hyperhidrosis with Botox injections drastically improves their quality of life!
